Used Car Buyer Faces Repossession After Fraudulent Sale
A buyer who paid 1.18 million baht for a used car discovered the vehicle was still under a finance agreement, leading to its seizure.
According to a report by Matichon Online on September 18, 2026, a victim has sought assistance from the 'Saimai Tong Rod' organization after falling prey to a fraudulent used car transaction. The buyer reportedly paid 1.18 million baht in cash for a vehicle, only to later have the car repossessed by a finance company.
When confronted, the used car dealership claimed they were experiencing liquidity issues, effectively leaving the buyer without both the money and the vehicle. This incident highlights significant risks for individuals purchasing second-hand vehicles in Thailand, particularly regarding the verification of ownership and existing financial encumbrances.
For residents and expatriates, this case serves as a cautionary tale about the importance of conducting thorough due diligence before finalizing any high-value purchase. It is essential to verify that a vehicle is free of outstanding debt and that the seller has the legal authority to transfer the title. At this stage, it remains to be confirmed whether the authorities will pursue criminal charges against the dealership or if the victim will be able to recover their funds through civil litigation. Potential buyers are advised to exercise extreme caution and consider professional legal or mechanical inspections before completing such transactions.
