Band Leader Apologizes Following Controversial Performance in Lampang
A band leader and singer in Lampang have issued a public apology after a performance featuring a costume resembling Buddhist monk attire sparked legal action.
On September 17, 2026, the leader of the 'Noina Inter' band and their lead singer publicly apologized to the residents of Lampang and the Buddhist community. This follows a performance on September 11 at an entertainment venue in Ko Kha District, where the singer appeared on stage wearing clothing resembling a monk's robe while performing a song. During the act, the performer removed the robe and engaged in an indecent display, which was subsequently recorded and circulated on social media.
The incident drew significant public criticism for being disrespectful to religious symbols and local faith. In response, the Lampang Provincial Office of Buddhism filed a formal complaint on September 14 with the Ko Kha Police Station. Authorities are currently investigating potential violations of the Criminal Code, specifically Article 206 regarding the insult of religion, Article 208 concerning the unauthorized wearing of monk attire, and Article 388 for public indecency.
The band leader stated that the act was a result of poor judgment rather than a deliberate attempt to mock or insult the religion. For residents and visitors, this case highlights the strict legal and cultural sensitivity surrounding religious representation in Thailand. While the apology has been issued, the legal proceedings remain ongoing, and the final judicial determination regarding the charges is yet to be confirmed.
