Laotian Authorities Repatriate 129 Thai Nationals Linked to Online Gambling
Lao officials have deported 129 Thai citizens involved in operating illegal online gambling networks, with some individuals identified as repeat offenders.
On September 17, 2026, authorities in the Lao PDR repatriated 129 Thai nationals—both men and women—following a crackdown on 11 illegal online gambling and scammer networks operating in Vientiane. The individuals were handed over to Thai officials at the First Thai-Lao Friendship Bridge in Nong Khai province.
According to Khaosod Online, a screening process conducted by a multidisciplinary team at the Nong Khai Territorial Defense Volunteer Company found no evidence of human trafficking or victims of deception among the group. Furthermore, none of the individuals were subject to outstanding arrest warrants. However, the Nong Khai Provincial Employment Office has initiated legal proceedings against all 129 individuals for failing to report their employment abroad, a mandatory requirement under Thai law.
Notably, officials identified 15 individuals among the group who had previously been deported for similar offenses. These repeat offenders reportedly utilized natural border crossings to re-enter Laos to resume their illicit activities.
For residents and travelers, this incident highlights the ongoing regional efforts to dismantle cross-border cybercrime operations. While the screening process confirmed that those returned were not victims of trafficking, the situation underscores the risks associated with unauthorized employment abroad. It remains to be confirmed whether further legal actions will be taken against the organizers of these gambling networks or if additional security measures will be implemented at natural border crossings to prevent recidivism.
