Thailand Addresses Labor Shortage Amid Declining Birth Rates
Industry Minister Varawut Silpa-archa highlights the impact of Thailand's shrinking workforce on the manufacturing sector, proposing a shift toward high-value labor and technological integration.
On September 15, 2026, Thailand’s Minister of Industry, Varawut Silpa-archa, addressed the national demographic crisis during a seminar titled 'Low Birth Rate, Low Quality Crisis.' The event, hosted by the Secretariat of the House of Representatives, featured key government officials and private sector leaders, including CP Group’s Suphachai Chearavanont.
Minister Varawut emphasized that the rapid decline in the younger population entering the workforce poses a significant threat to Thailand’s manufacturing sector, which currently employs approximately 6.39 million people out of a total workforce of 38.51 million, according to Q2 2025 data from the National Statistical Office. To mitigate this, the government is shifting its strategy from simply increasing headcount to enhancing the productivity of individual workers through technological upskilling and transforming factory environments into more family-friendly workspaces.
For residents and expatriates, this shift suggests a long-term government focus on automation and high-tech industrial development to maintain national competitiveness. While the government has identified the need for these structural changes, specific policy implementation details and the timeline for widespread industrial upgrades remain to be confirmed. The focus remains on how these adjustments will reshape the local labor market and the broader economic landscape in the coming years.
