Singer and Venue Face Legal Action Over Mock-Monk Performance in Lampang
Authorities in Lampang have initiated legal proceedings against a singer and an entertainment venue following a viral performance featuring a mock-monk act.
On September 15, 2026, Khaosod Online reported that officials in Lampang province have filed a formal complaint regarding a controversial performance at a local entertainment venue. The incident, which circulated widely on social media, involved a singer dressed in yellow robes mimicking a monk, an act reportedly inspired by recent news headlines involving a disgraced former monk.
Kanungkij Promnuchanon, Director of the Lampang Office of National Buddhism, reported the incident to the Mueang Lampang Police Station. The authorities are investigating potential violations of the Thai Criminal Code, specifically Section 206, which pertains to insulting religion and carries a penalty of one to seven years in prison or a fine of 20,000 to 140,000 baht. Additionally, the performer may face charges under Section 208 for the improper use of religious attire, and Section 388 regarding public indecency.
