Ayutthaya Temple Scandal Prompts Calls for Clerical Reform
A high-profile arrest involving a former Ayutthaya monk and his associate has triggered investigations into temple financial corruption and government plans for a digital database of monks.
According to a report by Khaosod Online, a former prominent monk in Ayutthaya and his female associate have been arrested and detained in prison. The pair faces charges related to the embezzlement of temple funds and money laundering, following the discovery of evidence involving personal use of temple assets. Authorities have seized property suspected to be linked to these illicit activities.
Police are currently expanding their investigation to trace financial flows, suspecting that additional individuals may be involved beyond the two primary suspects. In addition to the police and the Anti-Money Laundering Office (AMLO), the House of Representatives has scheduled meetings to monitor the progress of the case and discuss legislative measures to prevent future occurrences.
For residents and visitors, this case highlights ongoing efforts to increase transparency within religious institutions. Deputy Prime Minister Pakorn Nilprapan, who oversees the National Office of Buddhism, announced plans to establish a centralized digital database for the nation’s approximately 200,000 monks. This system aims to assist the Sangha Supreme Council in verifying clerical records, as current data management remains largely manual. While the investigation continues, the extent of the network involved in the alleged embezzlement remains to be confirmed by ongoing official inquiries.
