Ayutthaya’s Sala Loi Port Targeted for Major Upgrades

Deputy Transport Minister Sanpetch Boonyamanee recently visited the Sala Loi Port in Ayutthaya’s Tha Ruea District to evaluate ongoing efforts to modernize the facility. According to Khaosod Online, the project aims to enhance waterborne transport efficiency and national competitiveness by upgrading the port to accommodate larger vessels.

Currently, the 56-rai facility faces several operational hurdles. The port is limited to vessels under 500 gross tons, and the current infrastructure—including office buildings and cargo storage—has deteriorated after 13 years of use. Furthermore, a 6–7 meter height difference between the pier and vessels complicates the loading of bulk goods. Officials are also addressing concerns regarding high rental fees and insufficient water levels in the Pa Sak River during the dry season, which currently restrict navigation.

For residents and those involved in local logistics, these upgrades are intended to streamline cargo movement. The Ministry of Transport is coordinating with the Royal Irrigation Department to manage water releases from the Rama VI Dam, aiming to maintain a depth of approximately 4.5 meters to support larger ships. While the government is prioritizing these improvements, the final timeline for the necessary Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) and the completion of structural renovations remain to be confirmed. The ministry is also reviewing current fee structures to alleviate financial burdens on port users.
