Black-Chinned Tilapia Detected in Lam Pao Dam
Authorities in Kalasin province have confirmed the discovery of 12 invasive black-chinned tilapia in Lam Pao Dam, prompting calls for increased vigilance among local fishers.
According to a report by Khaosod Online on September 13, 2026, the Kalasin Provincial Fisheries Office has confirmed that 12 black-chinned tilapia have been captured in the Lam Pao Dam. The latest two specimens were caught by a local fisherman in the Nong Suang sub-district of Nong Kung Si district, where all previous sightings have also occurred.
Provincial Fisheries official Boonthong Phaocharoen stated that the situation remains contained within this specific area. Authorities are currently collaborating with local fishers to monitor the site and encourage the removal of the invasive species. Siranee Ngoichansri, Director of the Freshwater Fisheries Research and Development Division, noted that the situation is currently under control. Officials clarified that the current count does not meet the threshold of 10 fish per area required to declare an emergency disaster zone for financial assistance.
For residents and those visiting the region, this development highlights ongoing efforts to manage invasive species in Thailand’s waterways. While the situation is described as stable, the presence of these fish can impact local aquatic ecosystems and aquaculture, particularly shrimp farming. It remains to be confirmed whether the population will spread beyond the current localized area or if eradication efforts will successfully prevent further proliferation.
