Exploring Wat Marukkhanakhon: A Historic Gem in Nakhon Phanom

According to a report by Khaosod Online, Wat Marukkhanakhon, located along Highway 212 in the That Phanom district of Nakhon Phanom province, stands as a significant cultural site with a history spanning approximately three centuries. Once a thriving center, the temple is recognized as one of the eight satellite sites associated with the revered Phra That Phanom.

The temple grounds house the Phra That Marukkhanakhon, a square-shaped brick and mortar pagoda that mirrors the architectural style of Phra That Phanom. It measures 20 meters at its base and reaches a height of 50.9 meters. The site is currently led by Phra Khru Sophon Phawananusit, serving as the provincial meditation center.

Historical accounts suggest that in 1767, the original Marukkhanakhon city was situated along the Mekong River. Due to severe natural erosion and a major epidemic, the population relocated to Ban Nong Chan. Today, remnants of the ancient city and temple structures can still be found near the Don Nang Hong Songkhro School, adjacent to the current temple. For travelers and residents, the site offers a unique connection to the region's past. While the temple remains an active place of worship and meditation, further archaeological exploration may be required to fully uncover the extent of the ruins buried near the school grounds.
