Ayutthaya Abbot Arrested Amidst Embezzlement and Misconduct Allegations
A prominent 66-year-old abbot in Ayutthaya has been arrested on multiple charges, including embezzlement and money laundering, following reports of illicit activities within his temple.
According to a report by Khaosod Online Thailand, a 66-year-old abbot, Luang Phor Choti Dhammavaro, of a well-known temple in Ayutthaya province, was arrested by authorities on September 10, 2026. The abbot faces serious legal charges, including embezzlement of temple funds, malfeasance in office, and money laundering. Authorities allege that the abbot misappropriated over 92 million baht, transferring the funds to a close female associate.
During the arrest at the temple, police reportedly reviewed security footage from the abbot’s living quarters, which allegedly captured him engaging in sexual misconduct with the same associate. The case has gained public attention, notably involving Muay Thai fighter 'Suea Kim,' who had previously received a sacred tattoo from the abbot. Upon learning of the arrest, the fighter expressed shock and stated his intention to have the tattoo covered, citing the scandal.
