Abbot of Wat Phutthaisawan Arrested Amid Embezzlement Allegations
The abbot of a prominent Ayutthaya temple has been arrested on charges of embezzling over 92 million baht, sparking significant attention in the Buddhist and amulet-collecting communities.
On September 10, 2026, Khaosod Online reported the arrest of Phra Wachirayan Wi, also known as Luang Phor Atichot Dhammavaro, the 66-year-old abbot of Wat Phutthaisawan in Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya province. The arrest was executed under a warrant issued by the Region 1 Criminal Court for Corruption and Misconduct Cases, dated September 8, 2026.
Authorities allege that the abbot misappropriated temple funds, totaling over 92 million baht, and transferred the money to a close female associate to conceal the assets. Furthermore, evidence has surfaced in the form of video clips purportedly showing the abbot engaging in sexual misconduct within his living quarters.
This case has caused a stir within Thailand’s religious and amulet-collecting circles. The abbot is well-known for the 'Nuea Duang' (Elevating Status) amulet, minted at Wat Phutthaisawan in 2006. Following the news, market prices for these amulets on platforms like Tha Phra Chan have fluctuated significantly, with values ranging from tens of thousands to hundreds of thousands of baht.
For residents and visitors, this situation highlights ongoing scrutiny regarding temple financial management in Thailand.
