Civil Society Groups Call for Investigation into Blackchin Tilapia Exports

According to a report by Prachachat Business, the 'Voice from the Forest' network has released statistical data regarding the blackchin tilapia, an invasive species currently causing significant ecological concern in Thailand. The data indicates that between 2013 and 2016, 11 ornamental fish companies exported a total of 320,000 blackchin tilapia across 222 separate shipments to more than 10 countries. These exports occurred prior to the first reports of the species spreading within Thailand in 2017.

Civil society groups are now urging the government to conduct a retrospective investigation into the supply chain and traceability systems used during that period. They are specifically calling for an audit of the regulatory loopholes that may have existed regarding the classification of aquatic species at the time.

For residents and travelers, this development highlights ongoing efforts to understand the origins of the current environmental crisis affecting Thailand's waterways. While the ecological impact of the species is well-documented, the specific circumstances surrounding these historical exports remain a subject of public debate.
