Thailand Prepares for Energy Volatility as Global Oil Prices Surge
The Thai Ministry of Energy is implementing contingency measures as global crude oil prices, including Dubai crude, exceed $100 per barrel due to geopolitical tensions.
According to Khaosod Online Thailand, the Thai Ministry of Energy is actively monitoring global oil markets following a surge in prices driven by ongoing geopolitical conflicts. As of early September 2026, Dubai crude has surpassed the $100 per barrel mark, while West Texas Intermediate and Brent crude are trading at approximately $92.65 and $97.31 per barrel, respectively.
Veerapat Kiatfuengfoo, Deputy Permanent Secretary and spokesperson for the Ministry of Energy, stated that the government is managing domestic energy prices, supply security, and the Oil Fuel Fund to mitigate potential impacts. The Ministry anticipates that market volatility may persist until early next year. To ensure stability, authorities are diversifying crude oil procurement sources to reduce dependency on specific regions and maintain sufficient domestic reserves.
For residents and travelers in Thailand, this situation suggests a period of potential energy price instability. While the government maintains that national energy security remains intact, the long-term economic impact of these global fluctuations remains to be confirmed. Officials emphasize that the primary focus is on maintaining domestic readiness and disciplined fund management to navigate the uncertain global landscape. Travelers should monitor local fuel costs and transportation pricing, as these may be subject to adjustments depending on the duration of the current global market trends.
