Thai MP Challenges 4.2 Billion Baht HIMARS Procurement Plan
Opposition MP Kittipong Piyawanno has formally opposed the Thai Army's 4.2 billion baht HIMARS rocket system acquisition, citing concerns over supply chain dependency and domestic alternatives.
During a parliamentary session on September 7, 2026, regarding the Ministry of Defense budget, People's Party MP Kittipong Piyawanno voiced strong opposition to the Royal Thai Army’s plan to procure the HIMARS multiple rocket launcher system. The project, which carries a total commitment of 4.2 billion baht with an initial 420 million baht requested for the 2027 fiscal year, faces scrutiny over its operational independence.
Kittipong argued that the system’s reliance on U.S. government approval for ammunition and spare parts could hinder Thailand’s defense capabilities during a crisis. He questioned whether the military is purchasing a strategic capability or merely a launch platform, noting that even with funding, the availability of munitions remains subject to foreign authorization. Furthermore, he highlighted the D11A multi-purpose rocket system, developed domestically by the Defense Technology Institute (DTI) in collaboration with the army and private partners, as a more cost-effective and accessible alternative.
