Thai Authorities Report Surge in Online Fraud Cases
The Anti-Online Scam Center (ACSC) reports over 5,800 cases in one week, highlighting a recent incident involving a student coerced into losing 800,000 baht.
According to a report from Khaosod Online, the Anti-Online Scam Center (ACSC) in Thailand has released updated statistics regarding online criminal activity. Between August 30 and September 5, 2026, the Thaipoliceonline system recorded 5,863 cases, resulting in total damages exceeding 241 million baht. While the number of reported cases increased by 84 compared to the previous week, the total financial loss decreased by 19 million baht.
Among the recent interventions, the ACSC highlighted a case involving a female university student who was targeted by a call center gang. Using psychological manipulation and threats, the perpetrators coerced the student into demanding 800,000 baht from her parents. Authorities successfully intervened to assist the victim.
For residents and travelers in Thailand, these figures underscore the persistent risk of digital fraud. The ACSC noted that 'goods and services' scams remain the most frequent type of online crime, with Gen Z individuals identified as a primary target demographic. While the authorities continue to investigate and conduct arrests, the full scope of the criminal networks behind these specific call center operations remains under investigation. Individuals are advised to remain vigilant when conducting online transactions or receiving unsolicited communications.
