Nepal Faces Massive Recovery Costs Following Devastating Floods
Severe flooding along the Nepal-Tibet border has caused extensive infrastructure damage, with recovery costs estimated in the trillions of baht.
According to reports from Khaosod Online Thailand, Nepal is grappling with the aftermath of severe flooding that began on August 26 along its border with China’s Tibet Autonomous Region. The disaster has caused significant destruction to property and critical infrastructure, with initial damage estimates reaching at least 84.7 billion baht.
Authorities have projected that the initial four-month recovery phase—covering the reconstruction of roads, temporary housing, water supply, and electrical systems—could cost approximately 1.73 trillion baht. Dhammaraj Upreti, head of the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority, noted that this figure is a preliminary estimate based on inter-departmental coordination, with a more detailed assessment expected soon.
The human toll remains high, with over 1,280 fatalities reported across both sides of the border, including at least 1,259 in Nepal. Additionally, more than 4,200 people are currently listed as missing. The scale of the destruction is immense, with at least 7,500 homes completely destroyed and a requirement to rebuild approximately 20,000 houses in affected areas.
For travelers and residents in the region, this situation highlights potential long-term disruptions to transportation networks and essential services. While the government is prioritizing immediate relief, the full extent of the impact on travel infrastructure remains to be confirmed as detailed assessments continue.
