Thai Government Issues Warning Against Hiring Foreign Workers for Reserved Occupations
The Thai government has issued a strict warning to employers and the public against hiring foreign workers for jobs reserved exclusively for Thai nationals.
On September 4, 2026, Deputy Government Spokesperson Captain Phatdarasmi Thongsaluaykorn announced that the Thai government is intensifying efforts to regulate foreign labor. Authorities are now strictly enforcing laws that prohibit foreign nationals from performing work reserved for Thai citizens, such as Thai massage, barbering, beauty services, and driving.
According to Khaosod Online, the government is urging employers and the general public to refrain from hiring or utilizing the services of foreign workers who lack proper work permits or who are performing tasks outside the scope of their legal authorization. This enforcement is based on the Emergency Decree on Managing the Work of Aliens, B.E. 2560 (2017).
For residents and travelers, this development highlights the importance of ensuring that service providers are operating legally. Employers found in violation face fines ranging from 10,000 to 100,000 THB per worker. Repeat offenders may face imprisonment of up to one year or higher fines. While the government has signaled a proactive approach to inspections, the specific timeline for nationwide enforcement operations remains to be confirmed. Individuals are advised to be aware that utilizing unauthorized services could potentially lead to complications, and businesses are encouraged to verify the legal status of their staff to avoid significant penalties.
