Thai Parliament Addresses Regulatory Gaps in Data Center Operations
Opposition MP Suphanat Minchaiynun has challenged the government to tighten regulations on data centers, citing concerns over safety and legal loopholes.
On September 3, 2026, during a session at the Thai Parliament, Bangkok MP Suphanat Minchaiynun of the People's Party raised urgent questions regarding the oversight of data centers in Thailand. According to Khaosod Online, Suphanat highlighted that many facilities currently operate outside of standard urban planning laws and are not required to conduct Environmental Impact Assessments (EIA).
Suphanat expressed public concern regarding safety protocols, specifically noting that some data centers store hundreds of thousands of liters of fuel on-site. He questioned whether these facilities possess the necessary permits for such fuel storage and criticized the current lack of centralized control by the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration and the national government.
Representing the Prime Minister, Minister of Energy Ekniti Prompan responded to the inquiry, stating that the government is working to expedite the announcement of new regulatory measures to address these gaps.
For residents and travelers, this issue is significant as it pertains to urban safety and the rapid expansion of digital infrastructure in populated areas.
