Thai Government to Crack Down on Unregulated Data Centers
Deputy Prime Minister Ekniti Nitithanprapas has announced the first meeting of a new Data Center Policy Board to address legal loopholes and regulate the industry.
On September 2, 2026, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance Ekniti Nitithanprapas announced that the newly formed Data Center Policy Board will hold its inaugural meeting on September 4. The board aims to address regulatory gaps that have allowed some data center operators to exploit legal loopholes.
According to Khaosod Online, the government intends to integrate oversight across multiple agencies, including the Ministry of Energy and the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment, to ensure compliance. The Board of Investment (BOI) has already paused new investment approvals for data centers since April, meaning current operations are limited to previously approved projects.
For residents and business owners, this development signals a shift toward stricter enforcement of operational standards. The government’s primary goal is to ensure that the rapidly growing data center industry does not negatively impact the economy or the environment.
What remains to be confirmed is the specific nature of the legal measures that will be applied to operators found to be non-compliant.
