Thailand’s SEC Implements 'Travel Rule' for Digital Assets

The Thai Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) has introduced new risk management guidelines for digital asset transfers to combat money laundering and cybercrime.

According to a report by Khaosod Online Thailand, the Thai Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) has officially implemented the 'Travel Rule' for digital assets. This regulatory move requires digital asset business operators to collect and manage specific data for every transfer and receipt of digital assets.

The initiative aims to align Thailand with international standards, providing operators with sufficient information to monitor and mitigate risks related to money laundering and technology-based crimes. The SEC developed these guidelines in collaboration with the Anti-Money Laundering Office (AMLO) and other public and private sector partners. This measure serves as an interim framework while AMLO prepares broader regulations under existing anti-money laundering laws.

For residents and travelers using digital asset services in Thailand, this change signifies a more rigorous verification process for crypto transactions. The SEC finalized these rules following public consultations held between March and July 2026, during which stakeholders largely expressed support for the proposal.

While the core requirements for operators are now established, the long-term impact on transaction speeds and the specific technical integration requirements for individual users remain to be fully observed as businesses begin to comply with the new mandate. The SEC continues to coordinate with relevant agencies to ensure these measures effectively deter the misuse of digital assets in criminal activities.
