Online Scams in Thailand Result in Billions in Losses
Data from Thailand's Anti-Online Scam Center reveals that online shopping fraud remains the most prevalent form of cybercrime, causing significant financial damage throughout 2026.
According to a report by Khaosod Online, Thailand’s Anti-Online Scam Center has recorded over 190,000 cases of technological crime between January and July 2026. These incidents have resulted in total financial losses exceeding 9.3 billion baht. While the daily average of reported cases has decreased to 902 in 2026 compared to 1,040 in 2025, the volume of reports remains high.
Fraudulent online shopping and service transactions account for approximately 73% of all reported cases, totaling 139,000 incidents. The prevalence of social media in daily life has provided scammers with primary channels to target victims. An SCB EIC consumer survey titled “When Life Goes Digital” indicates that one in four respondents has already suffered financial loss due to these scams. Notably, more than half of those affected reported that their cases remained unresolved, particularly regarding instances where goods or services were paid for but never delivered.
For residents and travelers, this trend highlights the importance of exercising extreme caution when engaging in digital transactions. While the data provides a clear picture of the scale of the issue, it remains to be confirmed how authorities will improve recovery rates for victims, as many currently report a lack of effective remediation for their financial losses.
