Ministry of Transport Proposes Phase 2 Double-Track Railway Projects
The Thai Ministry of Transport is set to propose a 110-billion-baht double-track railway expansion to the mobile Cabinet meeting in Songkhla.
On August 31, 2026, Deputy Minister of Transport Siriphong Angkasakulkiat announced that the Ministry of Transport will present two double-track railway projects for approval during the mobile Cabinet meeting (Cabinet on the move) held in Songkhla on September 1, 2026. According to Khaosod Online, the proposed Phase 2 expansion involves a total budget of 110 billion baht, spanning a five-year commitment period.
While three lines were initially considered, the Ministry confirmed that the Hat Yai-Songkhla route requires further review before it can proceed. For travelers and residents in Southern Thailand, these infrastructure developments represent a significant long-term effort to enhance regional connectivity and transport efficiency.
Additionally, the Ministry addressed the status of light rail projects under the Mass Rapid Transit Authority of Thailand (MRTA). Although these projects have been under study since 2014, officials noted that further research is still required. Consequently, while light rail remains part of the long-term development plan for the South, it will not be included in the current Cabinet agenda. Stakeholders should note that while the double-track railway proposal is moving forward, specific timelines for construction and the final status of the Hat Yai-Songkhla route remain subject to further government review and formal approval.
