Airport Rail Link Operations Face Potential Transition Period
The Thai Ministry of Transport is negotiating a short-term extension for the Airport Rail Link operator as the current contract approaches its September 30 expiration.
According to Khaosod Online, Thailand’s Minister of Transport, Phiphat Ratchakitprakarn, is currently in discussions with Asia Era One (a CP Group subsidiary) to extend their operation of the Airport Rail Link for an additional two to three months. The current operating agreement is scheduled to conclude on September 30, 2026.
This transition period is intended to bridge the gap while the State Railway of Thailand (SRT) prepares to take over operations. The situation follows reports of ongoing negotiations between the SRT and the private operator, which also holds the concession for the high-speed rail project connecting Don Mueang, Suvarnabhumi, and U-Tapao airports. Minister Phiphat emphasized that the SRT has fulfilled its contractual obligations by delivering 100% of the required project land to the private sector ahead of schedule.
For travelers and residents, this development is significant as it concerns the continuity of rail services between Bangkok and Suvarnabhumi Airport. While the Ministry of Transport maintains that the land handover was completed correctly, the exact operational status after September 30 remains subject to the outcome of these ongoing negotiations.
