EGAT Initiates Feasibility Studies for Small Modular Nuclear Reactors

The Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT) has officially commenced feasibility studies regarding the potential adoption of small modular nuclear reactors (SMRs). According to assistant governor Eakarat Samintarapanya, speaking at a recent Matichon seminar, the organization has structured a five-phase development plan. This roadmap encompasses initial research, the pursuit of regulatory approvals, construction phases, operational management, and eventual decommissioning protocols.

To advance this initiative, EGAT is currently in the process of engaging consultants to conduct comprehensive assessments. These evaluations will focus on several critical areas, including technological viability, financial cost projections, the identification of suitable geographic locations, and potential environmental impacts. Furthermore, the studies will address necessary legal frameworks and conduct rigorous analyses of earthquake risks to ensure site safety.

For residents and travellers, this development represents a long-term shift in Thailand’s energy strategy. While the project is currently in the preliminary feasibility stage, it signals a potential move toward nuclear power as part of the national energy mix.
