Thailand Enhances Consumer Protection with AI Monitoring
Minister Supamas Isarabhakdi has directed the Office of the Consumer Protection Board (OCPB) to implement AI-driven surveillance to monitor online advertisements and product safety.
According to a report by Thai Post on August 24, 2026, Minister of Higher Education, Science, Research and Innovation Supamas Isarabhakdi has instructed the Office of the Consumer Protection Board (OCPB) to adopt a proactive approach to consumer rights. During a recent meeting of the Consumer Protection Board, officials addressed 63 specific complaint cases and reported that over 11,000 grievances were processed within the last three months, resulting in 24.29 million baht in consumer compensation.
To modernize enforcement, the OCPB is integrating artificial intelligence to monitor online marketplaces and advertisements in real-time. This initiative aims to identify and remove high-risk products more efficiently. For residents and travelers in Thailand, this development is significant as it signals a stricter regulatory environment for e-commerce platforms and digital advertising, potentially leading to safer online shopping experiences and more robust mechanisms for resolving disputes.
While the government has committed to this technological upgrade, the specific timeline for the full-scale deployment of the AI monitoring system and the exact criteria for identifying 'high-risk' products remain to be confirmed. Stakeholders are waiting for further details on how these automated systems will interact with existing consumer protection laws and whether they will impact the availability of certain imported goods.
