Thailand Air Travel Sees 25% Decline in Q2 2026
The Civil Aviation Authority of Thailand reports a significant drop in passenger numbers and flight volumes for the second quarter of 2026, citing geopolitical tensions and rising fuel costs.
According to data released by the Civil Aviation Authority of Thailand (CAAT), the nation’s aviation sector experienced a notable downturn during the second quarter of 2026. Total passenger volume reached 31.79 million, representing a 25.04% decrease compared to the previous quarter. This figure includes 14.65 million domestic passengers and 17.13 million international travelers.
Flight operations also saw a contraction, with a total of 211,532 flights recorded—an 18.71% decline from the first quarter. Of these, 108,414 were domestic flights and 103,118 were international.
Khaosod Online reports that the CAAT attributes this decline to the ongoing conflict in the Middle East and rising fuel prices, which have impacted global travel demand. While April saw a brief surge in activity due to the Songkran festival, which recorded 2.90 million passengers and 21,872 flights, and a boost from 37,985 pilgrims traveling for Hajj, the remainder of the quarter faced a significant slowdown in international travel.
For travelers and residents, this data suggests a cooling in aviation activity, which may influence future flight availability or pricing strategies by airlines. It remains to be confirmed how long these external economic and geopolitical pressures will continue to affect Thailand's air transport sector throughout the remainder of the year.
