Immigration Crackdown on Koh Tao Targets Illegal Employment
Surat Thani immigration authorities have arrested several foreign nationals on Koh Tao for working without permits, including diving instructors and service workers.
On August 20, 2026, immigration officials in Surat Thani province conducted a coordinated operation on Koh Tao, Koh Phangan district, targeting illegal foreign employment. According to a report by Khaosod Online, authorities inspected four locations, including two diving companies, a pharmacy, and a beauty salon.
The operation resulted in the arrest of several foreign nationals. Among those detained were British and Spanish diving instructors who were reportedly using Destination Thailand Visas (DTV) while working without the required work permits. Additionally, authorities apprehended Myanmar nationals accused of working in restricted occupations, such as pharmacy sales and beauty services, which are reserved for Thai citizens. This enforcement action follows directives from the Immigration Bureau to address unauthorized labor and potential 'nominee' business structures.
