Thai Authorities Investigate Employment Scam Targeting Canada and Finland
The Department of Employment and the Anti-Trafficking in Persons Division are investigating a recruitment scam involving 80 victims and 20 million baht in losses.
According to a report by Khaosod Online Thailand on August 18, 2026, the Department of Employment (DOE) and the Anti-Trafficking in Persons Division (ATPD) have launched an investigation into a fraudulent recruitment agency. Approximately 80 job seekers have filed complaints, alleging they were deceived by a company that promised employment in Canada and Finland.
The victims reported that the agency offered positions in fruit picking, packaging, and food processing with two-year contracts and monthly salaries of 70,000 baht. Each individual reportedly paid between 65,000 and 85,000 baht in processing fees. However, the promised travel and employment never materialized, resulting in total estimated damages of 20 million baht.
For residents and expatriates in Thailand, this case highlights the importance of verifying the legitimacy of recruitment agencies before making financial commitments. Engaging with unauthorized entities can lead to significant financial loss and legal complications.
As of now, the DOE and ATPD are working to verify the facts and pursue legal action against the company involved. It remains to be confirmed whether the victims will be able to recover their funds and what specific regulatory gaps allowed the agency to operate. Authorities are currently processing the evidence provided by the complainants.
