Thailand Strengthens Measures Against Transshipment and Origin Fraud
The Department of Foreign Trade is intensifying efforts to prevent Thailand from being used to circumvent international trade measures.
According to a report by Khaosod Online Thailand on August 18, 2026, the Thai Department of Foreign Trade (DFT) has reaffirmed its commitment to preventing the illegal transshipment of goods and the misrepresentation of product origins. Arada Fuangtong, Director-General of the DFT, stated that Thailand is actively addressing concerns raised by the United States regarding the use of the country as a transit point to bypass trade regulations.
To combat these practices, the DFT and the Thai Customs Department have increased oversight, including enhanced data integration with the Department of Industrial Works and provincial commerce offices. Authorities are conducting more frequent site inspections, retroactive origin audits, and stricter enforcement against non-compliant operators. Furthermore, the list of goods under joint surveillance with U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) has been expanded from 49 to 67 categories.
For residents and travelers, this development highlights Thailand's ongoing efforts to align with international trade standards. While these measures primarily target commercial logistics and industrial supply chains, they reflect a broader push for regulatory transparency. It remains to be confirmed how these increased surveillance measures will impact the speed of customs processing for specific goods or if further policy adjustments will be introduced in collaboration with international partners.
