Boat Operator Fined for Disturbing Sleeping Polar Bear in Svalbard

According to a report by Khaosod Online Thailand, a boat operator has been fined 5,255 USD (approximately 175,000 THB) for disturbing a polar bear near the Svalbard archipelago, located about 620 miles from the North Pole. The incident occurred earlier this month when individuals on a vessel spotted a polar bear sleeping on land and intentionally used a foghorn to wake the animal, causing it to move from its resting spot.

Lars Fause, the Governor of Svalbard, confirmed that the unnamed operator accepted the fine for violating local wildlife protection regulations. Since 1973, polar bears have been strictly protected in the region, with laws explicitly prohibiting the unnecessary disturbing, luring, or chasing of these animals.

For travelers and residents, this incident serves as a reminder of the strict environmental regulations in Arctic territories. While polar bears in the region have shown resilience despite habitat changes, authorities maintain a zero-tolerance policy toward human interference.
