Minister of Natural Resources Defends Nui Beach Reclamation Efforts

On August 15, 2026, Thailand’s Minister of Natural Resources and Environment, Suchart Chomklin, publicly addressed the ongoing dispute regarding Nui Beach in Phuket. The Minister stated he is undeterred by lawsuits filed against his office in the Administrative Court, emphasizing his commitment to reclaiming state-owned land from private investors who have occupied forest areas.
The conflict centers on the enforcement of Section 25 of the National Forest Act (1964). The Royal Forest Department previously ordered occupants to vacate the Nui Beach area and dismantle existing structures. Following an unsuccessful appeal by the occupants, the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment upheld the original order, leading the affected parties to initiate legal action against the Minister and the Ministry in the Phuket Administrative Court.
For residents and travelers, this situation highlights a broader government initiative to reclaim public forest land, often referred to as the 'Phuket Model.' While the Minister maintains that all actions are conducted transparently and legally to preserve public assets, the status of Nui Beach remains in flux.
