Phetchaburi Temple Struggles with Abandoned Fighting Cocks

According to a report by Khaosod Online Thailand on August 14, 2026, Wat Koh Kaew Suttharam in Ban Lat District, Phetchaburi, is facing a significant challenge due to the abandonment of fighting cocks on temple grounds. The abbot, Phra Khru Patcharasuttavithan, stated that owners frequently leave their defeated fighting cocks at the temple, sometimes even throwing the birds and their coops over the fence.

Currently, the temple is home to over 50 fighting cocks and various bantam chickens, totaling more than 100 birds. These animals have congregated near the funeral hall, leading to sanitation concerns due to excessive droppings. The temple’s 11 monks are currently responsible for cleaning the area and providing food, often relying on leftovers from their daily alms rounds.

For residents and visitors, this situation highlights the ongoing maintenance challenges faced by local temples that serve as de facto animal shelters. The accumulation of waste may impact the cleanliness of public areas within the temple complex. The abbot is now appealing to the public for donations to help construct proper enclosures and provide consistent feed for the birds.
