GULF Expands 'Our PET Bottle' Initiative to Upcycle Waste into Monk Robes
Gulf Energy Development has expanded its waste-reduction project, collecting over 1.1 tons of plastic bottles from its offices to be upcycled into monk robes and household goods.
According to a report by Khaosod Online, Gulf Energy Development (GULF) has entered the second year of its 'Our PET Bottle' (Kor Khuad Khong Rao) initiative. The company has expanded the program from its Bangkok headquarters to seven additional office locations in Thailand's Eastern region.
Between January and July 2026, employees collected 1,183 kilograms of PET plastic bottles. These materials were donated to Wat Chak Daeng, a temple known for its environmental efforts, to be upcycled into various products, including monk robes, blankets, and clothing. The company estimates that this initiative has successfully reduced greenhouse gas emissions by approximately 2.48 tons of carbon dioxide equivalent (tCO2e).
For residents and travelers, this project highlights a growing trend in Thailand where corporate entities and religious institutions collaborate to address plastic waste management. While the initiative demonstrates a tangible effort to promote a 'green' corporate culture, it remains to be seen how such programs will scale across other major private sector organizations in the country. The long-term impact of these upcycling efforts on local waste management infrastructure is not yet fully confirmed, though it serves as a notable example of circular economy practices currently being adopted in Thailand.
