WHO Warns 2026 Ebola Outbreak in DR Congo Could Become Deadliest on Record

According to a report by Khaosod Online citing the World Health Organization (WHO), the ongoing Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) is trending toward becoming the deadliest in history. WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus stated that if current infection rates persist, the 2026 outbreak will exceed the 2014-2016 epidemic, which resulted in at least 11,000 deaths.

Since the official declaration of the outbreak on May 15, authorities have confirmed at least 4,470 cases and 2,063 fatalities, representing a mortality rate of 46.2%. Dr. Matshidiso Moeti, WHO Regional Director for Africa, noted that health officials are struggling to keep pace with the virus. Research indicates the Bundibugyo strain began circulating in February, though initial cases were misdiagnosed as malaria or typhoid.
