Thai Defense Ministry Clarifies Status of Potential U.S. Drone Manufacturing

On August 13, 2026, Rear Admiral Surasak Kongsiri, spokesperson for the Thai Ministry of Defense, addressed reports concerning the potential establishment of a U.S. drone manufacturing plant in Thailand. Speaking at the Ministry, he emphasized that there is currently no formal agreement, commitment, or specific approval for such a facility.

According to the Ministry, the concept emerged following a visit to the United States by the Permanent Secretary of Defense, which served as an opportunity to explore drone technology, such as the LUCAS system, and to demonstrate Thailand's potential to support low-cost unmanned systems. The Ministry is currently evaluating the feasibility, cost-effectiveness, and potential frameworks for technology transfer to ensure the country derives maximum benefit.
