Mekong River Flooding Impacts Nakhon Phanom Border Areas
Rising Mekong River levels have flooded a Thai-Lao border market and agricultural land in Nakhon Phanom, with authorities taking preventative measures to protect the city center.
On August 12, 2026, reports from Khaosod Online indicated that the Mekong River in Nakhon Phanom reached a level of 11.98 meters as of 6:00 AM, marking a 15-centimeter increase from the previous day. The river is currently just 2 centimeters away from the critical threshold, which is expected to be reached later today.
The flooding has significantly impacted the Thai-Lao border trade point, where four buildings are submerged under one meter of water. Additionally, upstream water from Bueng Kan and the Lao PDR has inundated over 100 rai of agricultural land in Ban Klang sub-district, approximately 28 kilometers from the city center, damaging banana, bamboo, and coconut plantations. A three-kilometer stretch of concrete road in the area is also currently underwater.
In response, the municipal government has closed all four floodgates to prevent water from backflowing into the city. For residents and travelers, this situation highlights potential disruptions to cross-border trade and local transport in the affected areas. While authorities are actively managing the floodgates to protect the urban core, the situation remains fluid. It is yet to be confirmed how long the water levels will remain at this height or if further evacuations will be necessary as the river reaches its critical peak.
