Temple Funds Lost to Call Center Scam in Chiang Rai
An abbot in Chiang Rai’s Mae Chan district lost nearly 9 million baht to a call center scam after making 207 separate transfers since the beginning of 2025.
According to a report by Khaosod Online, the abbot of Mae Kham Temple in Chiang Rai province fell victim to a sophisticated call center fraud. Between the start of 2025 and August 2026, the abbot transferred temple funds on 207 separate occasions, resulting in a total loss of nearly 9 million baht. The deception was only uncovered after the abbot became suspicious and contacted the Mae Chan Police Station for an investigation.
On August 8, 2026, a meeting was convened at the temple involving the Mae Chan district ecclesiastical chief, local administrative officials, and the superintendent of the Mae Chan Police Station to address the significant financial loss. Representatives from three local villages were also present to discuss the situation.
For residents and visitors, this incident highlights the persistent threat of financial fraud in Thailand, even targeting religious institutions. While the investigation is ongoing, the case serves as a reminder of the importance of verifying the identity of any party requesting financial transactions, regardless of their perceived authority or affiliation. It remains to be confirmed how the perpetrators managed to deceive the abbot over such a prolonged period and whether any of the stolen funds can be recovered through the ongoing police inquiry.
