Norwegian Football Federation Calls for FIFA President's Resignation
The Norwegian Football Federation (NFF) has formally requested the resignation of FIFA President Gianni Infantino following controversy over a proposed $20 billion commercialization plan for the World Cup.
According to a report by Khaosod Online Thailand, the Norwegian Football Federation (NFF) has publicly demanded that FIFA President Gianni Infantino step down from his position. This call for resignation stems from FIFA’s controversial proposal to establish a subsidiary, 'FIFA Forward Enterprise' (FFE), to manage commercial operations for future men’s and women’s World Cup tournaments.
FIFA reportedly intended to value the new entity at $20 billion, retaining majority control while selling up to 20% of shares to external investors to raise approximately $4.2 billion. The plan has faced significant backlash, with the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) threatening to boycott FIFA-governed tournaments. Several nations have also withdrawn their support for Infantino.
NFF President Lise Klaveness stated that Infantino currently lacks the necessary trust to lead FIFA effectively, urging him to resign immediately. For residents and travelers in Thailand, this development is significant as it highlights potential instability in the governance of global football, which could impact future tournament logistics or international sporting events hosted in the region. It remains to be confirmed whether other national football associations will join Norway in this formal demand for resignation or if FIFA will proceed with its commercialization strategy despite the widespread opposition.
