DR Congo Quarantines Boat Passengers Amid Ebola Outbreak Concerns
Health authorities in the Democratic Republic of Congo have quarantined nearly 200 boat passengers following a death suspected to be linked to Ebola.
According to a report by Khaosod Online citing AP, health officials in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) have placed nearly 200 passengers under quarantine. This measure was taken after a passenger who disembarked from the vessel approximately three weeks ago in Pimu, Mongala Province, died with symptoms consistent with Ebola.
Dr. Jean Kaseya, Director-General of the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC), noted that the current outbreak, which began in May, is considered the fastest-spreading in the country's history. Official figures indicate 4,053 confirmed cases and at least 1,850 deaths. While the vessel is reportedly located near the capital, Kinshasa, authorities have not confirmed any Ebola cases within the city itself.
For travelers and residents, the situation highlights the ongoing health crisis in the region. Officials have stated that 60-70% of new cases are occurring among individuals with no known contact with previous patients, describing the spread as "alarming." Furthermore, medical personnel in Ituri Province are currently protesting over unpaid wages, adding strain to the healthcare response.
It remains to be confirmed whether the deceased passenger or the quarantined individuals are positive for Ebola, as authorities are currently awaiting laboratory test results. The exact location of the quarantine and its duration have not been disclosed.
