British Surgeon Stripped of License Following Critical Surgical Error
A surgeon in Greater Manchester has been barred from practice after a botched bowel cancer operation nearly killed a patient.
According to a report by Khaosod Online Thailand, a surgeon in Greater Manchester, UK, has had his medical license revoked following a severe error during an emergency bowel cancer surgery. The surgeon, identified as Dr. Abdel Rahman, performed a procedure to remove a tumor but connected the stomach to the wrong part of the small intestine using a technique described by experts as unprecedented. This error blocked the patient's digestive system, causing waste to back up into the stomach.
Despite the patient suffering from severe abdominal pain, vomiting, and an inability to defecate for weeks, the medical team initially insisted the bowel would recover. It was only after the family filed a complaint a month later that another surgeon, Dr. Anthony Rette, performed corrective surgery to save the patient's life. Dr. Anthony Blower, an expert witness, characterized the error as one of the most serious a surgeon could commit, noting that the patient would have died without the intervention.
