Education Minister Orders Stricter School Security Following Nonthaburi Shooting
Following a fatal shooting at Debsirin Nonthaburi School, the Ministry of Education is implementing enhanced security measures, including potential bag checks.
On August 7, 2026, Thailand’s Minister of Education, Prasert Chantararuangthong, visited Debsirin Nonthaburi School in the Bang Kruai district following a violent shooting incident. According to Khaosod Online, the attack resulted in multiple injuries and seven fatalities among students and staff.
Minister Prasert expressed deep condolences and confirmed that the Ministry is currently coordinating with Chulalongkorn University’s psychology department to provide mental health support to those affected. The Ministry of Education has directed the Office of the Basic Education Commission (OBEC) to provide unconditional assistance to all victims, while injured individuals have been transported to hospitals for treatment.
In response to the tragedy, the Minister announced that the government is reviewing security protocols. Because the weapon was brought into the school inside a student's bag, the Ministry is now considering the implementation of mandatory bag checks to prevent future incidents.
For residents and visitors, this event highlights a significant shift in school safety policies across Thailand. While the immediate situation is being managed by authorities, the investigation remains ongoing. The public is awaiting further details from forensic results and official evidence collection. Travelers should be aware that schools may implement stricter access controls and security screenings in the coming weeks as these new measures are finalized.
