Mae Hong Son Local Officials Urge Government to Address Infrastructure Restrictions
Representatives from Mae Hong Son’s local administrative organizations have petitioned the Prime Minister to resolve legal barriers preventing infrastructure development in forest-designated areas.
On August 6, 2026, Pongpipat Meebenjamas, the Chief Executive of the Mae Sam Laep Subdistrict Administrative Organization (SAO), reported that a delegation from Mae Hong Son submitted a formal request to the Prime Minister and relevant cabinet ministers. The petition was presented during a seminar held in Chon Buri between August 5 and 7.
The delegation highlighted that 98% of Mae Hong Son province is legally classified as forest land. This designation prevents the province’s 50 local administrative organizations from executing essential public infrastructure projects, even when budgets have already been approved. According to the report, approximately 6,743 projects are currently stalled due to restrictions under the National Reserved Forest Act and the National Park Act. The officials are requesting a review of cabinet resolutions to allow for the development of basic public services and the repair of damaged infrastructure within these zones.
For residents and visitors, this issue is significant as it directly impacts the maintenance and expansion of public utilities and essential services in the region. While the petition seeks to unlock these stalled projects, it remains to be confirmed how the central government will respond to these requests for regulatory relief. The delegation also raised concerns regarding water contamination in the Salween River, which remains a separate point of advocacy for the local authorities.
