Thailand’s Energy Regulatory Commission Proposes New Tiered Electricity Pricing
The ERC has concluded public consultations on a new tiered electricity tariff structure, featuring a 3-baht rate for low consumption and higher rates for heavy usage.
According to a report by Prachachat Business, Thailand’s Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC) has finalized public consultations regarding a new tiered electricity pricing structure. The proposal aims to incentivize energy conservation by adjusting rates based on monthly consumption levels.
Under the proposed plan, households consuming up to 200 units of electricity per month would benefit from a rate of 3 baht per unit. However, the structure introduces a tiered system for higher consumption levels. For households exceeding 400 units, the rate is set at 4.3583 baht per unit, with additional charges for public electricity usage applied to consumption beyond the 200-unit threshold. The Thailand Development Research Institute (TDRI) has reportedly expressed support for the initiative, noting that the government is moving in the right direction, though it remains a partial subsidy measure.
For residents and long-term visitors, this change could impact monthly utility budgeting, particularly for those living in larger properties or using high-energy appliances like air conditioning. While the ERC has completed the public hearing phase, the official implementation date and the final approval of these specific rates remain to be confirmed by the government.
