Phuket Forest Protection Drive Intensifies with New Inspection Targets
Thailand’s Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment has launched a new phase of the 'Phuket Model' to reclaim state land, targeting 40 additional sites for encroachment inspections.
On August 5, 2026, Suchart Chomklin, the Minister of Natural Resources and Environment, announced an escalation in efforts to protect and restore forest areas in Phuket. According to Khaosod Online, the ministry is implementing the 'Phuket Model' to combat illegal land occupation and curb the influence of nominee-backed investment groups.
As part of this initiative, the Royal Forest Department has been directed to coordinate with local administrative bodies, the provincial police, the Central Investigation Bureau (CIB), and the Royal Thai Navy to conduct comprehensive inspections. The operation, dubbed 'Reclaiming Phuket’s Forests,' has already begun surveying eight initial target areas to identify unauthorized land use. The Minister further stated that the government is prioritizing the designation of Nui Beach as a 'recreational forest' to ensure public access and sustainable use.
For residents and visitors, these developments signal a period of increased regulatory scrutiny regarding land ownership and coastal access. While the government aims to restore public access to natural sites, the full scope of the 40 targeted locations remains under investigation. It is not yet confirmed how these inspections will impact existing businesses or tourism infrastructure in the affected zones.
