Visa exemption and Visa on Arrival are entry schemes, not e-Visa categories. They depend on passport/travel-document country, purpose, period and current official lists. Use the Thai e-Visa portal’s tourist-visa check as well as the current Department of Consular Affairs information before travel.
Official classification
- Visa exemption under the currently applicable nationality or bilateral-agreement rules
- Visa on Arrival for the nationalities and purposes currently listed by Thailand
- A pre-travel tourist or other e-Visa when neither entry scheme applies or when the travel purpose requires it
Prepare the application carefully
- Use the official Thai e-Visa portal to select the live visa category for the passport/travel-document country and current application location.
- Applicants must be outside Thailand when applying through the e-Visa process. Do not start from an assumption that a visa is available solely because a category appears in a general list.
- Create the e-Visa account, complete the form accurately, upload the documents requested for that exact route, pay the applicable fee and keep the approval confirmation sent by email.
- Passport-country and travel-document details used in the official check
- Return/onward travel, funds, accommodation or other evidence required at the entry point or by the current scheme
- A pre-travel e-Visa application when the live official check indicates that a visa is required
Visa, entry and stay are separate decisions
Entry schemes, a visa’s validity and permission to stay are separate. Immigration decides admission and the permitted stay at the border. Do not rely on an old list or third-party table.
Activity boundary
Visa exemption or Visa on Arrival does not authorize work, long-term residence or a different purpose from the applicable entry scheme.
Known developments and changes to watch
Effective 15 September 2026, Thailand revoked the former 60-day visa-exemption scheme. Tourism entry now operates under the revised 30-day exemption (60 countries/territories) and 15-day exemption (2 countries/territories), while Visa on Arrival is limited to 3 territories. Travellers admitted prior to this date retain the duration stamped upon entry. Check live official lists and the Thai e-Visa portal.
