Thailand study and training visas

Official orientation for Thai education e-Visa routes covering study, training, seminars, observation visits and eligible internships.

What this page covers

Choose a study route only where the course, school, university, training, project, seminar or internship genuinely matches the selected non-immigrant education purpose. The education provider and the applying mission determine the supporting evidence required for the individual file.

Official classification

  • Non-Immigrant ED for education, training, seminars, observation and eligible internships
  • ED Plus where the official mission lists the higher-education route
  • Religious study can require a separate education or religious classification depending on the activity and supporting authority

Prepare the application carefully

  • Use the official Thai e-Visa portal to select the live visa category for the passport/travel-document country and current application location.
  • Applicants must be outside Thailand when applying through the e-Visa process. Do not start from an assumption that a visa is available solely because a category appears in a general list.
  • Create the e-Visa account, complete the form accurately, upload the documents requested for that exact route, pay the applicable fee and keep the approval confirmation sent by email.
  • Passport and photograph
  • Admission, enrolment, invitation or confirmation from the Thai education or training provider
  • Course, training or internship details that identify the period and purpose
  • Institutional registration, approval or other documents requested by the mission for the selected programme

Visa, entry and stay are separate decisions

The visa route, initial permission to stay and any extension are separate decisions. Continue to meet the education purpose and follow Immigration instructions after arrival.

Activity boundary

An ED route is not a general work authorization. A different activity, institution or period may require a new application or Immigration permission.

Known developments and changes to watch

No category-specific rule change was found in the official sources reviewed for this page on 14 July 2026. Thailand’s Visa Policy Review Committee met on 30 June 2026 and was asked to develop future proposals, but that meeting did not itself create a new visa rule. Only an official notice with an effective date changes the applicable requirements.

    Keep the passport/travel document, photograph and any travel, financial, accommodation or location evidence requested for the selected route consistent and readable.

    Include only the category-specific letters, invitations, relationship records, institutional documents or approvals that support the purpose selected in the application.

  4. Confirm the post-approval steps

    General information

    Print or retain the e-Visa approval confirmation, check carrier and entry requirements, and obtain separate Immigration, labour or sector permissions where the activity needs them.
