Thailand retirement and long-stay retirement visas

What this page covers

Retirement routes serve applicants who meet the relevant age, financial, insurance and nationality conditions for the specific programme. The short O route, long-stay O-A route and O-X route are not interchangeable and are assessed under different criteria.

Prepare the application carefully

Use the official Thai e-Visa portal to select the live visa category for the passport/travel-document country and current application location.
Applicants must be outside Thailand when applying through the e-Visa process. Do not start from an assumption that a visa is available solely because a category appears in a general list.
Create the e-Visa account, complete the form accurately, upload the documents requested for that exact route, pay the applicable fee and keep the approval confirmation sent by email.
Passport and photograph
Age, pension, income, bank, insurance or financial evidence required for the chosen route
Police, medical, insurance or legalization documents when the live mission checklist requires them
Nationality and residence evidence where the programme is limited to specified applicants

Visa, entry and stay are separate decisions

The visa’s validity, the permission granted at entry and any extension are different legal steps. Retirement status does not itself grant a right to work.

Activity boundary

Do not select a retirement route for employment or business. Use the responsible mission’s current checklist because financial thresholds, insurance evidence, legalization and eligible-nationality rules can differ by programme and change over time.

Known developments and changes to watch

No category-specific rule change was found in the official sources reviewed for this page on 14 July 2026. Thailand’s Visa Policy Review Committee met on 30 June 2026 and was asked to develop future proposals, but that meeting did not itself create a new visa rule. Only an official notice with an effective date changes the applicable requirements.
