What this page covers

The e-Visa portal lists research and science as a distinct category. The file should identify the host organization, project, role, period and any approvals that support the chosen research activity.

Official classification

  • Non-Immigrant RS for research and science where listed by the responsible Thai mission
  • A work, education or BOI-related route may be more appropriate if the real activity is employment, a course or an investment role

Prepare the application carefully

  • Use the official Thai e-Visa portal to select the live visa category for the passport/travel-document country and current application location.
  • Applicants must be outside Thailand when applying through the e-Visa process. Do not start from an assumption that a visa is available solely because a category appears in a general list.
  • Create the e-Visa account, complete the form accurately, upload the documents requested for that exact route, pay the applicable fee and keep the approval confirmation sent by email.
  • Passport and photograph
  • Host-institution or project letter describing the research or scientific activity
  • Project, affiliation, sponsorship or governmental documentation requested by the mission
  • Evidence that dates, location and role match the application purpose

Visa, entry and stay are separate decisions

The visa category must remain aligned with the actual research activity. In-country extensions, changes of purpose and additional approvals are separate Immigration or sector-authority matters.

Activity boundary

Do not treat an RS route as a general employment authorization. Check whether the host institution or project requires additional work, research, ethics or security permissions.

Known developments and changes to watch

No category-specific rule change was found in the official sources reviewed for this page on 14 July 2026. Thailand’s Visa Policy Review Committee met on 30 June 2026 and was asked to develop future proposals, but that meeting did not itself create a new visa rule. Only an official notice with an effective date changes the applicable requirements.
