Thailand family and dependent visas

A practical official guide to Thai e-Visa routes for staying with Thai or non-Thai family members and qualifying dependants.

What this page covers

The family category covers a genuine stay with a qualifying family member in Thailand. The correct route and evidence depend on whether the sponsor is Thai or non-Thai, the relationship, the sponsor’s lawful status and the planned duration.

Official classification

  • Non-Immigrant O for qualifying stays with Thai or non-Thai family residing in Thailand
  • Dependent routes connected to an eligible principal holder, including where the relevant programme has its own dependant category

Prepare the application carefully

  • Use the official Thai e-Visa portal to select the live visa category for the passport/travel-document country and current application location.
  • Applicants must be outside Thailand when applying through the e-Visa process. Do not start from an assumption that a visa is available solely because a category appears in a general list.
  • Create the e-Visa account, complete the form accurately, upload the documents requested for that exact route, pay the applicable fee and keep the approval confirmation sent by email.
  • Passport and photograph
  • Marriage, birth, adoption or other official relationship evidence as applicable
  • Evidence of the sponsor’s Thai nationality, visa/status or residence in Thailand, where requested
  • Host letter, address or financial evidence required by the responsible mission

Visa, entry and stay are separate decisions

A family relationship does not automatically establish entry, a particular stay period or a work right. The e-Visa decision, Immigration permission and any extension are assessed separately.

Activity boundary

Use documents that accurately describe the relationship and sponsor status. A change in family status, sponsor status or purpose can affect the appropriate route and should be checked with the responsible authorities.

Known developments and changes to watch

No category-specific rule change was found in the official sources reviewed for this page on 14 July 2026. Thailand’s Visa Policy Review Committee met on 30 June 2026 and was asked to develop future proposals, but that meeting did not itself create a new visa rule. Only an official notice with an effective date changes the applicable requirements.
