Thailand Eases Vehicle Ownership Rules for Welfare Cardholders

According to Khaosod Online, the Thai Ministry of Transport is updating its database to automatically exempt vehicles from ownership eligibility checks for state welfare cardholders. Specifically, the new criteria will disregard cars older than 20 years and motorcycles older than 15 years. Deputy Minister of Transport Siriphong Angkasakulkiat stated that the Department of Land Transport is currently integrating this data to submit to the Ministry of Finance by August 2026.

This initiative follows a surge in appeals at transport offices, with approximately 200,000 individuals seeking review. Officials estimate that these adjustments could qualify an additional 2 to 3 million people for welfare benefits who were previously excluded due to vehicle ownership restrictions. Furthermore, the government has directed local authorities, including village heads, to assist elderly and disabled citizens by collecting information and providing services directly at their homes to ensure no eligible individuals are overlooked.

For residents, this policy shift may significantly impact access to state support. However, it remains to be confirmed how quickly the Ministry of Finance will process the integrated data and when the final list of newly eligible recipients will be officially announced.
